Somalis are the second biggest group of African born Londoners after Nigerians and the 12th largest national group in the city.
Of the 65,000 in the capital 20% live in Brent and neighbouring Ealing. There are significant numbers in Newham and across the north London boroughs.
Somali seamen began coming to the UK in the 19th century, but the current population has been driven by those seeking to escape the conflicts of the 80s and 90s in their own country
Somalis constitute one of London’s larger Muslim communities.
